Polymer Clay Pen Blanks

Polymer Clay is a type of oven bake modeling clay. All brands of polymer clay are manmade materials composed of the same basic building materials: gels, fillers, plasticizers, coloring agents, and resins. As a former graphic designer, my favorite designs to make are abstract, but I also like to use a mixture of handcrafted and purchased canes for the flower designs. Making canes with polymer clay is similar in techniques originally learned by artists using millefiori for glassware and beadmaking. Each polymer clay cane is sliced to apply to a pen tube. For more information about making polymer clay pens, please visit our tutorials.

Polymer clay is applied to a specific pen kit tube, so it's important to select the type of pen kit you want to make before choosing a pen blank listed below. Our polymer clay pen blanks are made to meet or slightly exceed kit bushings so you can fine sand and buff for the smoothest finish, using either a lathe or sanding by hand. Tube ends have already been rough cut, but to obtain proper fit, you can sand, mill, or cut ends with sharp tools before pen assembly. Sanding is best completed with wet / dry sandpaper and used with water. Continue to sand until the pen blank meets your fit preferences. You can add a drop of dish soap if needed to reduce surface tension.

Our 100% satisfaction return policy is to guarantee against potential pen blank flaws such as bubbles or sanding issues for the pen maker, and not for guaranteeing third party satisfaction. Please verify all pertinent design details for any custom work requests as we will not accept third party returns for any non-flaw issues.

DOES POLYMER CLAY NEED A FINISH?

To enhance the color of your clay color and create a long lasting shine, we recommend clay pen blanks are finished with CA. Other water-based finishes such as Renaissance wax, mod podge, polymer clay glaze, or Varathane floor polish also work, with the understanding it may need to be reapplied every few months to maintain the shine. You can also buff polymer clay with rough cotton like a piece of old jeans or micromesh to create a natural matte finish.
